West Sumba (ANTARA News) - Efforts to fight drug abuse and rehabilitate drug addicts in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) have until now remained "just a slogan", a local health official said.

Head of Public Health Section of West Sumbawa`s Health Service Ruslan Effendy said here on Monday drug abuse eradication efforts so far were still in the form popularization programs while no concrete steps had been taken to realize the programs.

"We are still at the stage of consultations and popularization. We have yet to take concrete steps such as addict head counts and action to rehabilitate them," he said.

He said the only concrete step that had been taken was obliging would-be public servants to have their urine tested before they could continue with pre-assignment training.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono launced a free narcotics movement at the National Monument square in Jakarta on Sunday, coinciding with the observation of international anti-narcotics day.

Millions of drug users in the country come from various social and professional backgrounds, including artists, musicians, students, politicians, and even policemen.

The number of drug users in Indonesia now, according to the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has reached five million.
