Banda Aceh, Aceh Darussalam (ANTARA News) - National Police chief General Timur Pradopo presented awards to officers involved in the "Walet Rencong 2010" operations to eradicate a terrorist network in Aceh.

The award was symbolically handed over by Adjunct Commissioner Apriadi who is now chief of intelligence of the Pidie Resort Police Command on the occasion of the commemoration of the 65th police anniversary here on Friday.

The ceremony was also attended by Aceh governor Irwandi Yusuf, Aceh regional police chief Inspector General Iskandar Hasan, Aceh House of Representatives leaders, regional administrative leaders, regligious, community and youth leaders.

The Walet Rencong team has successfully pacified 35 members of a terrorist cell led by Abddullah Sonata in Jalin Jantho forests, Aceh Besar, in 2010.

Five of them were killed during fire fights that had also killed three police officers and wounded four others.

After the operations the police confiscated three M-16, one AK-57, one AK-58, one Gold-type gun, a magazine, 464 bullets and Rp17 million worth of cash.

At the ceremony the National Police chief also gave awards to some Islamic clerics namely Tgk Husaini, the leader of Seulimun Islamic boarding school in Aceh Besar and Tgk. Maimun Ahmad as well as Aceh community.

He also extended three patrol boats, eight patrol cars, 76 motorcycles and 99 wireless units to the the Aceh regional police command.

General Timur Pradopo, flanked by governor Irwandi Yusuf and Aceh regional police chief Inspector General Iskandar Hasan inspected the boats after the ceremony.

Timur Pradopo hoped the anniversary would become the starting point to improve police policies in the future.

He said conducive security conditions that had been made could not be separated from the success of the police, the community and other parties in building them.

"In the future the cooperation must be continued so that the conditions would remain maintained," he said.

"We will continue to improve our performance to create better police," he said.

With regard to the upcoming regional elections General Timur Pradopo hoped they could be carried out smoothly and peacefully.

"I appealed to the Aceh regional administration to prepare the elections well so that they would run smoothly and peacefully," he said.
