The written commitment should be reached where recipient countries are obliged to communicate to Indonesia first before they execute its citizens or workers who are to be punished for an involvement in a legal case.
Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono`s decision to summon all Indonesian ambassadors to countries where many Indonesian migrant workers facing execution was hailed by an observer as a correct step.

"The president`s decision to summon the ambassadors to have coordination is a correct step that all sides should support it," International law observer Wilhelmus Wetan Songan of the Kupang-based Nusa Cendana University, said here on Sunday.

He said that the important thing to do in the coordination was to assure that ambassadors would be able to produce written commitments between Indonesia and the worker recipient countries, besides increasing their roles and functions in representing Indonesia abroad.

"The written commitment should be reached where recipient countries are obliged to communicate to Indonesia first before they execute its citizens or workers who are to be punished for an involvement in a legal case," he said.

He said that the matter was important as a form of the state`s efforts to protect its citizens who were involved in a legal problem overseas.

"So far, Indonesian citizens who are implicated in a drug case still fail to get the state attention, particularly workers who contributed foreign exchange to the state," Songan said.
