Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA News) - Of the 1,192 islands in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), 719 are still nameless, Governor Frans Lebu Raya said at a meeting with 290 sub-district heads here on Monday.

"East Nusa Tenggara has a total of 1,192 islands, but 719 of them have no names and therefore all parties including the sub-district heads, should give serious attention to them," the governor said.

According to Governor Lebu Raya, standardization and topographical naming for those islands was still a problem because of the nature of the region.

He said that administratively East Nusa Tenggara has 290 sub-districts comprising 2,650 villages.

The governor added that the bigger and smaller islands in the province have their own geographic condition that make them difficult to reach.

"The condition draws our serious attention to make accurate data about those nameless islands," the governor said, adding that the sub-district and village heads have the responsibility to do so.

Therefore he called on the sub-district and village heads to collect accurate data to name those nameless islands in a bid to prevent them from being claimed by other countries.
