Solo, C Java (ANTARA News) - Johar Arifin Hussein, former deputy minister of youth and sport affairs, here on Saturday, was elected as the new chairman of the All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) for the 2011-2015 period.

In the second round of voting, Johar who is known to be close to the majority voters or Group 78, got 61 votes, defeating Agusman Effendi who collected 38 votes, while one delegate abstained.

The voting process was implemented behind closed doors.

In the first round of the voting, Johar Arifin Hussein got 53 votes, Agusman Effendi 39, Japto Soerjosoemarno 4, Adhan Dambea 2, Achsanul Qosasih 2, IGK Manila 0, Iman Arif 0, Syarif Bastaman 0, and Sarman 0.

The PSSI Congress in Solo, was organzied by the PSSI Normalization Committee (KN), following the failure of a previous congress in Jakarta last May 20 to choose a new PSSI leader.

KN failed to elect the new PSSI executive board chairman through its congress due to rivalries that had prompted FIFA (Federation of International Football Associations), the body controlling football globally to seek a settlement.

Following the failure to set up a new national football association executive board, Indonesia then struggled hard to avoid sanctions from the world`s football governing body FIFA.

FIFA has given the PSSI another month to choose the latter`s new "president" before FIFA may suspend all professional football activities in Indonesia. July 9, 2011 was finally chosen as the polling time for the PSSI.

The Solo PSSI Congress`s main agenda included the election of a general chairman, vice chairman and nine members of the Executive Committee (Exco) 2011-2015.

FIFA barred Nurdin Halid (former PSSI general chairman) along with three other candidates - George Toisutta, Arifin Panigoro and Nirwan Bakrie - from running.(*)
