Washington (ANTARA News/AFP) - The United States on Tuesday strongly condemned the assassination attempt on Guinean President Alpha Conde, whose election last year was hoped to be a turning point in the coup-prone country.

"The United States condemns the apparent attempted assassination of Guinean President Conde in the strongest terms," State Department spokeswoman Heide Bronke Fulton said.

"Overthrowing a democratic government through force and violence is unacceptable," she said.

Rogue soldiers in the West African country engaged in a two-hour gun battle in the middle of the night, leaving one dead. Conde`s bedroom was blasted with bazookas and rocket-propelled grenades, but he told French radio that he survived as he was not sleeping there.

Conde, a longtime political opponent, took office in December after Guinea`s first democratic election in 40 years. The United States had pressed for a previous junta to step down after troops in September 2009 massacred more than 150 people at a protest. (*)
