Surabaya (ANTARA News) - Indonesia is facing difficulties in reducing its milk import because its need for the commodity continues to increase this year, a deputy minister said.

"The more so, the national milk consumption increases by 1.6 percent every year in line with the increase in the people`s prosperity level," Deputy Minister for trade affairs Mahendra Siregar said here on Tuesday.

He said that imported milk still accounted for 70 percent of the national milk need while the local milk production only accounted for 30 percent.

The deputy minister said that the high milk consumption was driven by the high economic growth with reached about 6 percent every year.

After all, diversification of milk-based businesses also increased such as presence of processed goods yogurt, cheese, coffee and chocolate.

"In the last three years, the domestic milk production, actually, also increased by about 25-30 percent," he said.(*)
