Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Deputy House Speaker Priyo Budi Santoso asked police to act soon to overcome a shooting incident that killed four in Jayapura, Papua province so that it would not escalate.

"I ask state apparatuses to intervene soon to overcome the bloody incident. It should not happen that apparatuses ignore it," Priyo said at the parliament building here on Monday.

He said that all sides should restrain themselves to restore public order and security.

It was reported that in Jayapura city, Papua provice, four people were shot dead and stabbed by unidentified people at 8.15 a.m. early on Sunday Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT).

Of the four, three were civilians and one was a member of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI). Five other people were injured, who are at present being treated at Abepura hospital.

The four who were killed were First Private Don Keraf, driver Sardi of Koya Timor resident, and a couple, husband and wife Wisman and Titin.

In the meantime, Priyo also asked conflicting parties who were involved in the communal clashes in Puncak Jaya district, Papua, which had claimed the lives of 17 people, following the conflict among supporters of the regional head candidates.

On Sunday (July 31), a communal conflict in Ilaga village, Puncak District, Papua, broke out leaving 17 residents dead.

Papua Police Spokesman Senior Commissioner Wachyono said the communal conflict broke out in front of the Regional Legislative Assembly (DPRD) of Puncak Jaya district, and later escalated where a resident house, a customary house and a DPRD car were set on fire.

Wachyono said the communal clashes took the lives of 17 residents and injured scores of others.

The clashes were caused by the discontent of the supporters with regard to the process of Puncak Jaya district head elections in the province of Papua.(*)
