Bandung, W Java (ANTARA News) - The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) has decorated German biochemist and Nobel laureate Prof Robert Huber for his innovations in chemistry.

ITB rector Akhmaloka conferred the award called Ganesha Widya Jasa Adi Utama on Huber after the latter delivered his scientific oration before around 5,000 ITB freshmen at Sasana Budaya Ganesha building here on Tuesday.

"Today we have a special guest who will deliver his scientific oration. He is Prof Robert Huber, the 1988 Nobel laureate in chemistry," Akhmaloka said.

Akhmaloka said ITB always organized a scientific oration for its freshmen and this time it was the Nobel laureate who would deliver it.

"Scientific orations are a long time tradition at the ITB campus. We hope the scientific orientation to be delivered by Prof Huber will enlighten all of us," he said.

Huber delivered a scientific oration themed "How I became a scientist". His visit in Bandung was part of a UN decision which declares 2011 part of International Year of Chemistry (IYC).

To commemorate the IYC 2011, ITB in cooperation with the Indonesian Chemists Association (HKI) invited the Nobel laureate to give a scientific oration before its freshmen. (*)
