Purwokerto, C Java (ANTARA News) - A fire reportedly razed forest on the slope of Mount Slamet in Central Java on Sunday.

The head of Kutabawa village in Purbalingga district, Supono confirmed the fire.

"The fire was for the first time detected on Saturday at 8 p.m.," he said.

He said personnel of relevant agencies were currently holding a coordination meeting at Bambangan post in Kutabawa village as part of efforts to fight the fire.

Separately, on Sunday, SAR coordinator of Kutabawa village, Slamet said his side could not yet establish the cause of the fire.

He believed the fire affected protected forest on the slope of Mount Slamet.

"We will localize the fire by making a ditch," he said.

The 3,428-meter-high volcano is located in the five districts of Purbalingga, Pemalang, Tegal, Brebes, and Banyumas.(*)
