The German press quoted the ICC`s top prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo as saying the arrest of Saifal-Islam was `very important` for The Hague-based war crimes court which issued an arrest warrant for him in June.
Moammar Qadhafi, Saif al-Islam and Abdullah al-Sanussi, Qadhafi`s brother-in-law and Libya`s secret service chief, are all wanted by the ICC in connection with the brutal crackdown of anti-Qadhafi protests which began in February.
Moreno-Ocampo made clear that the arrest warrants had to be enforced.
The ICC official said he did not know the whereabouts of al-Islam because the court had yet to have contact with the rebel Transitional National Council.
His arrest was confirmed by other sources, added Moreno-Ocampo.
Qaddafi`s and al-Sanussi`s whereabouts were not known, but Qadhafi`s eldest son, Mohamed Qadhafi, was also reportedly arrested Sunday.
In February, the United Nations Security Council authorized Moreno-Ocampo to probe allegations of war crimes in Libya.
