Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA News) - North Sumatra`s export of animal/vegetable fats and oils rose sharply in the seven months through July 2011, contributing US$2.450 billion to the province`s overall exports reaching US$6.736 billion.

Compared to the same period last year, the export of animal/vegetable fats and oils in the first seven months of 2011 represented a 45.83 percent increase, the head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) office in North Sumatra, Suharno, said here on Saturday.

He said the rising global commodity prices were responsible for the increase in the value of animal/vegetable fat and oil exports.

With the steep rise in their export value, animal/vegetable fats and oils remained the biggest foreign exchange earner among the province`s non-oil/non-gas commodities, he said.

This was followed by rubber and rubber products which contributed US$2.199 billion to the province`s foreign exchange earnings in the January-July 2011 period, he said.(*)
