Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Work to build the Sunda Strait Bridge (JSS) will take 10 years to complete, according to Wiratman Wangsadinata, the project's planner.

"Normally, it will take around 10 years to complete a construction project the size of the Sunda Strait Bridge," Wiratman said here on Wednesday.

The bridge's construction was estimated to cost nine billion US dollars based on calculations made in 2009.

The 29km-long JSS will be connected to the Jakarta-Merak toll road, the planned 14-km-long Cilegon-Ciwandan toll road and the planned 80-km-long Bakauheni-Bandar Lampung-Metro toll road.

The design of the JSS's upper structure would be like that of the Messina Strait Bridge in Italy which had a span of 3,300 meters while the design of its lower structure would refer to the Akashi Kaikyo bridge in Japan which had a span of 1,991 meters, according to Wiratman.

The JSS would be 60 meters wide and have three lanes among others for roads and railway tracks.

The Sunda Strait bridge would have a kind of deck similar to that on the Messina Strait Bridge but with a shorter span.

Expected to be the world's longest suspension bridge, the JSS would link Java Island and Sumatra Island.

The bridge would significantly cut travel time between the islands which now takes several hours by ferry.

Some 20 million people crossed the strait in 2006 and the figure is predicted to double by 2020. (F001)
