Jakarta (ANTARA News) - House Speaker Marzuki Alie said the electronic identity (e-ID) card program is crucial for the success of the General Elections in 2014 and regional head elections.

Therefore, the government must be more serious in implementing the online population data collection program, Marzuki said here on Thursday.

The e-ID card program was an important breakthrough program of the governmenty, he said.

"The e-ID card program must be able to carry out the administrative works orderly. So, the accuracy of population data collection will be stronger," he said.

He urged the people to support the program which could help build a healthy democracy. "Why is it so? Because it will collect the accurate population data," he said.

Ari G Dwipayana, a political observer of the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM), appreciated the government for implementing the e-ID card program in order to get the accurate number of the country`s population, which was very important for the general elections implementation.

He said the government should give priority to Java and Sumatra islands in the on-line population data system because the two islands hosted most of Indonesia`s population.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR)`s Commission II Chaeruman Harahap hoped that the program could be completed in 2012.

"The online population administration system is our hope, in order to get a permanent list of eligible voters for the general elections in 2014," he said. (*)
