Jakarta (ANTARA News) - National Police Chief General Timur Pradopo has announced that all sector police offices in Papua Province, especially in Puncak Jaya District, are on alert status.

"All of them are on alert , particular;y in Puncak Jaya," General Timur said at the State Palace here on Tuesday.

Police have deployed a team to hunt unidentified men who shot dead Mulia Sector Police Chief Adjunct Commissioner Dominggus Otto Awe on Monday (Oct 24).

He called on the public to give police a chance to investigate the shooting incident.

"The team is now conducting an investigation and hunting the perpetrators. Just wait for the results," he said.

The police are coordinating with the National Defense Forces (TNI) and other agencies in the investigation.

The motive of the shooting was still unknown but it was confirmed that the perpetrators wre members of a group which had frequently disturbed security in Papua.

Meanwhile, Chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Marciano Norman said th agency was doing its best to prevent the occurrence of further violence that could claim lives in Papua.

The killing of the Mulia sector police chief was purely criminal , he said.

"The incident was purely criminal because the perpetrator snatched the sector police chief`s weapon and shot him. So we have to increase our vigilance," he said.

On Monday (Oct 24), Mulia Sector Police Chief Adjunct Commissioner Dominggus Otto Awes was shot twice in the head.

Awes was monitoring activities at Mulia airport alone when suddenly he was attacked by two persons who grabbed his weapon.

Police said the man who shot to death the chief of the Mulia district police in Papua earlier on Monday belonged to a separatist group.
