Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government has issued an action plan for nationwide greenhouse gas emission reduction to achieve the emission reduction target of 41 percent in 2020, an official said.

The government regulation serving as the basis for the implementation of the action plan was signed on September 20, 2011, Head of the Public Relations Bureau at the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) Maruhum Batubara said at a discussion here on Friday.

Under the government regulation, the central and regional governments including ministries and government institutes were responsible for implementing the action plan, he said.

He said the regulation was the government`s effort and resolute to fulfill its pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent on its own in 2020 and by 41 percent with the help of international organizations.

The action plan covers the agricultural, forestry and peatland, energy and transportation, industrial and waste treatment sectors, he said.

The government regulation also required governors to outline their action plan for greenhouse gas emission reduction no later than 12 months after it has been issued. They must later convey their action plan to the Minister of National Development Planning/Head of the National Development Planning Board and the Home Affairs Minister, he said.

Meanwhile, ministers and government institute heads were required to convey their action plan to the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs who would later report the implementation of the action plan to the President at least once every year, he said. (*)
