Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Wednesday afternoon led a meeting to discuss efforts to accelerate development in Papua and West Papua provinces.

The meeting was attended by members of the Papua and West Papua Development Acceleration Working Unit, Julian Aldrin Pasha, a presidential spokesman, told the press.

The president received reports on the latest conditions in Papua and promptly gave necessary directives.

The working unit headed by Bambang Darmono was tasked with making sure that the government`s target of improving the people`s welfare in Papua through its development acceleration program was achieved.

The members of the working unit have not been officially installed, but the legal foundation requirement has been met and the team was ready to work immediately, Julian said.

He said earlier that Papua`s problems should not only be solved through approaches in the political, legal and security domains but also required efforts in the economic and people`s welfare fields.

Tensions in Papua have increased lately following shooting incidents and a protracted strike by PT Freeport Indonesia workers.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto said earlier this month the government had always been quite serious in its efforts to develop Papua province.

The government`s seriousness was reflected , for instance, in the issuance of Law No. 21/2011 on special autonomy and of Presidential Instruction No. 5 / 2007 on acceleration of development in Papua and West Papua.(*)
