Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The collapse on Saturday of the Kutai Kertanegara bridge over the Mahakam river in East Kalimantan raised concern of many sides, including the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII).

PII Chairman Said Didu said here on Tuesday that his organization hoped the government would seriously conduct investigation into the causes of the accident which killed 18 people and injured tens of others.

"For the improvement of professional standards. safety and infrastructure development supervision ahead, the government should find the causes of the collapse of the bridge, which spans 710 meters over the Mahakam river," Didu said.

He said that the collapse of the bridge had become the attention of the international world, it even became the topics of informal talks of the Conference of ASEAN Federation Engineering Organization (CAFEO) which was taking place in Brunei at present.

"PII hopes that the relevant parties would really take the results of the investigation as the basis of their decisions they will take ahead," Didu said.

Taking the form of the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco, the bridge was built by state-owned bridge construction firm Hutama Karya in 1995 and began official operations in 2011.

The bridge collapsed on Saturday afternoon when the traffic was busy on it, killing at least 18 people and injuring tens of others.
