Bengkulu (ANTARA News) - Bengkulu`s Fatmawati Soekarno airport`s equipment and facilities are to be upgraded to meet international standards starting in 2012 , an airport management official said.

"We will increase the thickness of our runway so that wide bodied aircraft can land on and take off from it," Fatmawati Soekarno airport`s chief administrator Samsul Bandri said here on Thursday.

He said the airport now already had a Runway Visual Range (RVR) system to monitor conditions on the runway and ensure that all planes can take off or land safely.

Meanwhile, Chief of Bengkulu province`s Transportation and Information Office Ali Berti said other improvements that had already been made at Fatmawati Soekarno airport included expansion of waiting rooms and the building of cargo warehouse.

He expressed hope that in the future all commodities from Bengkulu province could be sent to their destinations by air.
