Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Government of Indonesia needs a comprehensive policy to handle illegal immigrants in the country, international observer Hikmahanto Juwana said here on Thursday.

"In facing the phenomenon of illegal immigrants who make Indonesia their transit point, the government should have a comprehensive policy to overcome the problem," Hikmahanto said.

According to him, the Government of Indonesia has to tighten the regulation for foreigners who would like to enter the country illegally.

"In this case the the Directorate General of Immigration will play its important role solve the cases," Hikmahanto said, adding that patrol at Indonesian water territory should be intensified by adding the number of patrol boats of Navy and Water Police.

"The law must be enforced effectively by the law enforcers against the human traffickers," he added.

Hikmahanto pointed asserted that the government through its representatives in the illegal immigrants` country of origin should familiarize the rules in Indonesia that foreigners who entered the country illegally would be given the strongest possible sanction.

He said a comprehensive policy of the government was needed to ensure that Indonesia would not be made a haven for the illegal immigrants.(*)
