Bukittinggi, W Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Mount Marapi in West Sumatra at 9.15 am on Friday spewed volcanic ash into the air that eventually drifted over a distance of one kilometer in nothern direction, a meteorology official said.
The blackish volcanic ash rose to a height of about 500 meters from the mountain`s peak, Suparno, an officer of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), said here on Friday, adding the ash-spewing activity lasted about 15 minutes.
Mount Marapi is 2,891 meters high and located in the Koto Baru region, X Koto sub-district, Tanah Datar district, West Sumatra.
"We are recommending to keep the volcano`s status at level II alert," he said.
Between the 18th century and 2008, Mt Marapi erupted 454 times with 50 of the eruptions categorized as large scale.
