Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Former home affairs minister Hari Sabarno was sentenced to 2.5 years in jail on Thursday for corruption.

Chief judge Suhartoyo of the Jakarta Corruption Court, in reading out the verdict, said the retired army general was proven guilty of committing corruption together with others.

Hari was also fined Rp150 million or had to spend three more months in jail if he failed to pay.

The judge said Hari Sabarno, when he was home affairs minister, directed 22 regional administration chiefs in a radiogram signed by Oentarto to procure fire engines only from a company belonging to Hengky Samuel Daud.

Hari was also aware of and had approved the issuance of a letter to exempt PT Istana Sarana Jaya belonging to Hengky Samuel Daud from import duties with regard to the procurement of the fire engines.

The judge said Hari also proved to have received a Volvo car worth Rp808 million and furniture paid by the wife of Chenny Kolondam.

Hari`s actions obviously ran against the government`s corruption eradication program, the judge said.

After hearing the verdict, Hari said he would appeal it.(*)
