Banda Aceh, Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Aceh`s Independent Election Commission (KIP Aceh) has rescheduled the closing date for the registration of organizations that will monitor Aceh`s regional simultaneous polls to March 9 from January 16, 2012, a KIP official said.

The registration period extension for monitoring organizations was made due to the rescheduling of the regional simultaneous election from February 16 to April 9, 2012, the KIP Aceh working group chairman Yarwin Adi Dharma said here on Friday.

The Constitutional Court (MK) had previously allowed the Aceh Independent Election Commission (KIP Aceh) to adjust the schedule of the elections.

MK ruled that the polls had to take place by April 9, 2012, at the latest, the date requested by KIP Aceh.

The first-ever simultaneous regional elections will consist of a poll for governor/deputy governor and elections for 17 district chiefs and mayors out of 23 districts/towns in Indonesia`s western-most province.

The regional polls will be participated in by a total of 3,202,390 voters.

The registration process is normally started 30 days before the vote cast, he said.

Part of the monitoring agencies is the Asian Network for Free and Fair Election (Anffrel) based in Bangkok, Thailand.(*)
