Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Differences in perception are a contributing factor to the occurrence of social disasters such as brawls and clashes between neighborhood communities, Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri said here on Saturday.

"Social disasters occur simply because people assume that others are not of their group, neither of their tribe, nor of their parents and brothers or sisters," the minister said.

He said social disasters such as student brawls, ethnic conflicts, and mass violence would possibly continue to happen anywhere in the country if people failed to unite their perceptions.

According to him, social disasters would be eliminated only if people regard others as their own parents, brothers and sisters, and friends.

"I am certain that nobody will hurt his or her own parents, brothers and sister, and even his or her close friends with the same perception," Salim Segaf said.

Therefore he added that the moribund spirit of mutual help as the national identity and character should be rekindled by working together to address the social issues.

He said that addressing the social issues was the responsibility of not only the government but also all public elements.

The minister noted that social disaster was feared to continue to happen if all public elements and the government failed to participate in addressing it completely.
