Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered the Transportation Ministry to conduct an overall evaluation of the performance of its component operational units in light of the recent spate of traffic accidents, one of his spokesmen said.

The evaluation had to be done on the performance of every directorate general in the Transportation Ministry, namely the land, sea and air transportation directorates general, presidential spokesman Julian Pasha said here Tuesday.

Each of the directorate general had to conduct an internal and overall evaluation in order to prevent more accidents on land, at sea and in the air, Julian said, adding "I believe, the ministry has already responded."

Julian also said the President was concerned about the repeated occurrence of traffic accidents that had taken many lives.

According to the National Police, in the January-mid-February period, as many as 35 people had died every day in traffic accidents throughout the country.

The number of traffic accidents that had occurred in the same period was recorded at 9,884 in which 1,547 people died, 2,562 sustained serious injuries and 7,564 others light injuries.

The type of vehicle mostly involved in the mishaps was the motor cycle (9,555) , passenger car (1,357) and bus (207).

The latest traffic accident happened on Monday (Feb 13) involving a bus plying the Surabaya-Yogyakarta route causing the death of four people and injuries to 28 others at Tempuran village, Paron subdistrict,Ngawi district, East Java. The bus hit a tree with a diameter of 60 centimeters that stood on the roadside.(*)
