Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian highschool and university students dominated an Asian English Olympics (AEO) organized by Bina Nusantara English Club (BNEC) at Universitas Bina Nusantara February 13-17.

The event, themed "Inspiring Asia", saw the participants competing in six categories ; debates, scrabble, story telling, news reading, speechmaking and short film making.

The competition in the debate category was won by the NUSA group, scrabble by Christian Oktavius of Universitas Bina Nusantara, story telling by Ahmad Rizky of SMA Insan Cendekia, news reading by Zilvia of Bina Nusantara, and speech making by Agustin Priyanti of STIE IT dan Bisnis.

The best short film was made by Stikom London School Jakarta and titled "Framed Life".

Zilvia also won the highest score for her appearance in a talk show and as a news presenter. Therefore,she would be a guest presenter in a TV Indonesia Now program with Dalton Tanonaka.

Elsa Novita, the AEO organizing committee`s chairwoman, said the Olympics was held to improve English-language proficiency of Indonesian youths but also to promote closer relations among students from all over Asia.

She was proud that the Indonesian participants were able to show that their ability to express themselves in English was not second to that of students from other countries.

The event was participated in by at least 500 students from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and a few other countries.

The olympics was for the first time held on a national scale in 2005 and on a South East Asian scale in 2010. Considering the great interest in the event, another olympics would be organized in 2012, Elsa said. (*)
