Bandarlampung, Lampung (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck the waters off Sukabumi district, West Java, on Wednesday night.

The quake which occurred at 08.28 p.m. was centered about 78 km southwest of Sukabumi town, 132 km southwest of the West Java provincial capital of Bandung or 176 km of Jakarta at a depth of 10 km, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.

The quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, it said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

Sukabumi is one of the country`s quake-prone areas.
