Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Former minister for state-owned enterprises Sofyan Djalil was questioned as a de charge witness on Monday in an alleged plane-hire corruption case.

Spokesman of the Attorney General`s Office Adi Toegarisman said Sofyan was questioned by AGO investigators as a mitigating witness for Hotasi Nababan.

Hotasi Nababan has been named a suspect in an alleged corruption case over plans to hire two Boeing 737-400 and 737-500 airplanes for state-owned PT Merpati Nusantara Airlines (MNA).

Adi said Sofyan met after receiving the Attorney General`s summons. "We questioned him," he confirmed.

In the meantime, Sofyan, who was asked by reporters, said he came to the AGO building to comply with the AGO summons as an expert witness. But he did not explain further.

In that case, the AGO has named three suspects, former MNA president director Hotasi Nababan, former MNA finance director Guntur Aradea and General Manager of MNA`s Aircraft Procurement Tony Sudjiarto.

The suspects were charged with violating articles 2 and 3, Law No. 1999, in conjunction with Law No. 20 / 2011.

The case began with an agreement between MNA and US Thirdstone Aircraft Leasing Group Inc (TALC) in December 2006.

In the document, TALG agreed to meet the request of MNA to lease Boeing 737-40 and 737-500 airplanes. MNA then transferred US$1 million as a security deposit.

But until January 2007, TALG had not been able to deliver the aircraft and the security deposit money has not been refunded.

The AGO views the MNA actions to have involved corrupt criminal elements.
