... government will take action against violators of the law and of human rights in Papua...Bogor, West Java (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Yudhoyono and UN Chief Ban Ki-Moon discussed security issues in Papua during their bilateral meeting at Bogor Palace, here, on Tuesday morning.
Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, President Yudhoyono said one of the tasks of the government of Indonesia was to maintain unity and the integrity of Indonesia's territorial sovereignty.
However, the head of state asserted that the government would also take action against the soldiers and police officers who violated the law and human rights in Papua.
"The government will take action against violators of the law and of human rights in Papua," the president noted.
Besides the issue related to Papua, religious harmony in Indonesia was also discussed by the Indonesian president and the UN chief at the bilateral meeting.
"We are also talking about religious harmony, and we will continue to maintain it," Yudhoyono said, adding that global and regional issues, such as that in the Middle East, North Africa, and the conflict in the Hormuz Strait, were also discussed.
He noted that at a regional level, they also discussed the developments in the South China Sea, Myanmar, the Korean Peninsula, and the Thai--Cambodian border, as well as the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and Indonesia--UN bilateral relations within the framework of strategic cooperation.
Meanwhile, the UN chief thanked President Yudhoyono for Indonesia's active participation in the United Nations.
Ban Ki-Moon expressed hope that Indonesia would continue to deploy its UN peacekeeping force because he admired Yudhoyono who used to be a member of the Indonesian UN peacekeeping force in Bosnia in the 1990s.
He said Indonesia would continue to contribute to the UN peacekeeping mission, especially in extremely difficult situations such as those experienced in Haiti, Lebanon and Darfur.
