Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on all elements who wish to conduct demonstrations against the government`s fuel policy to remain lawful and avoid hurting others.

In a press conference, before leaving for state visits to China and South Korea, President Yudhoyono said that the government was open to people expressing their aspirations but he hoped in doing so they would not run against public interests.

"I have seen social protests from certain community elements. Carry them out peacefully so that no one gets hurt because if that happens it would only hurt us all. For those who do not share the government`s view please use the democracy room but in doing that adhere to the law and follow the ethical rules," he said.

Demonstrations have taken place in several parts of the country following the government`s plan to cut the fuel subsidy by raising the price of subsidized fuels as of April 1, due to the increasing global price of crude oil.

President Yudhoyono said while he is on a state visit to China and South Korea until March 29 Vice President Boediono would carry out his tasks.

President Yudhoyono also hoped the discussion of the 2012 revised budget would run smoothly and meet expectations.

"While I am abroad for a week, the vice president will carry out the president`s duties. I hope the discussion between the government and the House of Representatives on the revised budget goes well," he said.

President Yudhoyono left Jakarta at 10 am on Thursday, accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono and several cabinet ministers including industry minister MS Hidayat, trade minister Gita Wirjawan, sports minister Andi Mallarangeng, minister/state secretary Sudi Silalahi and other high ranking officials.(*)
