Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA News) - No casualties were reported in the magnitude-8.9 earthquake that struck Simeulue district, Aceh Province, last Wednesday at 3:38 p.m., Bukit Barisan Military Base Chief Mayor General Lodewijk F Paulus said here on Thursday.

He said his personnel have monitor the affected areas including northern part of Sumatra Island and Simeulue District, by using an airplane.

As an anticipatory effort, he added, the air force base in Medan city, North Sumatra, has been prepared as a stopover for planes going to Aceh.

An earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter Scale hit Simeulue District, Aceh Province, on Wednesday at 3:38 p.m Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB).

The earthquake was centered at 364 kilometers of Simeulue, at a depth of 10 kilometers. An aftershock of 8.5 on the Richter Scale rocked shortly after the first quake.
