Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has congratulated all workers in connection with the celebration of International May Day on May 1, the presidential spokesman for political communication Daniel Sparringa said here on Monday.

"Besides expressing his congratulations, the president will also follow the political message to be conveyed by labour rallies this year," Sparringa stated.

Yudhoyono hoped that all activities involving the observance of May Day would proceed in an orderly and lawful manner, he added.

According to Sparringa, the president called on all Indonesian people to express their sympathies towards workers, who will celebrate May Day on Tuesday.

Sparringa noted that the president has taken a number of strategic decisions for improving worker welfare. The government aims to develop a number of hospitals for workers and their families beginning next year.

These hospitals will be built in cities with industrial concentrations such as Tangerang, Bekasi, Surabaya and others.

In addition, there are plans to increase the number of low-cost flats for labourers, to facilitate cheap transportation with the distribution of 200 buses at industrial areas and to raise the tax-free income ceiling from Rp1.32 million to Rp2 million per month.

"All these are important for the workers` welfare," Sparringa added.
