Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Noerdin Muhammad Amin (41) alias Tudin, from Aceh, had been sentenced to 20 years in jail by the Medan district court on Thursday because he was found guilty of bringing 6.9 kg of methyl amphytamine locally called shabu-shabu kept in a cake wrapper.

The North Sumatra chief prosecutor Dwi Meily Nova has demanded death for the defendant Noerdin.

The council of judges of the Medan district court led by M Ramli Amat Darasah in its verdict said that the defendant also had to pay Rp 8 billion in fines.

Besides, the defendant was also guilty of violating Article 114 (2) of Law No 35 of 2009 on Narcotics.

The aggravating matters of the defendant was not taking part in the government`s efforts of eradicating narcotics, while the mitigating circumstances is that he admitted all his mistakes and promised not to repeat them.

And after the verdict had been read, the defendant Noerdin broke into tears because he was freed from the death sentence.

Earlier, the public prosecutor from the North Sumatra high public prosecution office, Dwi Meily Nova, demanded the death sentence on the defendant Noerdin Muhammad Amin for bringing 6.9 kg of shabu-shabu.

He was caught bringing the narcotics when at the domestic departure terminal of the Polonia airport in Medan on Friday, November 4, 2011. (*)
