Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - ASEAN member countries on Wednesday launched an ASEAN Curriculum Source Book to promote the ASEAN spirit of belonging in the region.

"In essence, the ASEAN Curriculum Source Book contains five main issues, ranging from knowing ASEAN to introducing the identity values of the ASEAN community," Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture Muhammad Nuh said after the launch of the book here on Wednesday.

The book which contains ASEAN cultural heritages would serve as a source book from which ASEAN teachers and students could benefit to know more about ASEAN so that ASEAN member countries would have solid relations in the future, he said.

The minister noted that the ASEAN spirit of belonging among the peoples of ASEAN member countries was still weak, whereas the region was home to 600 million people or 9 percent of the world`s population.

With the huge population, ASEAN had the great potential to play a great role at global level, he said.

"The educational world also plays a strategic role in promoting the ASEAN spirit of belonging among the peoples of ASEAN member countries," he said.

The launch of the book was the side event of East Asia Summit - 1st Educational Ministerial Meeting held here on July 3-5.

The meeting is participated in by 10 ASEAN member countries, China, South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Russia.

ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) groups Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.(*)
