Malang, E Java (ANTARA News) - Brawijaya University of Malang has chosen Google to help the university develop its information and communication technology program for education system.

The Head of Information Technology Development of Brawijaya University, R. Arief Setyawan, said that the university chose `Google Apps for Education` due to its open and easily accessible system.

"Besides, the system can be linked to other existing systems without purchasing new licenses," Setyawan said here on Saturday.

According to Setyawan, choosing `Google Apps for Education` (GAFE) is the best solution to improve the information and communication technology program used by the university, while supporting the education system.

"In addition, Google Apps helps us reduce the expense for information technology programs since it uses the cloud computing-based operating system," he said at the launch of Google Apps on some local campuses.

Meanwhile, Education Lead for Google Apps Supporting Program in Asia Pacific, Pepita Gunawan, said education is a core mission of Google Apps, which is organizing the world`s information to become universally accessible.

"Until now, Google has partnered with schools and universities in 146 countries. We will continue providing exceptional learning experiences for students, empowering innovative communities, as well as building technology foundations and access," Pepita said.

According to Pepita, in 2011 as many as 16 million students used Google Apps to support their education. She added that GAFE can encourage students and teachers to get the full benefit of interaction in the learning environment.

"Such conditions also contribute positively to the `online` ecosystem by producing good local content that can be read in various countries, cultures, and languages," Pepita said.

"Google Apps for Education is open to all educational institutions, from primary education to higher education," she noted.
