"We don`t want to become another NOC in the world."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - State oil and gas company PT Pertamina said it is not interested in taking over the position of the defunct BP Migas as an upstream oil and gas regulator.

BP Migas was disbanded by the Constitutional Court last week as it is considered against the state Constitution favoring more foreign investors.

Pertamina president Karen Agustiawan said after a meeting with Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik and Minister for State Enterprises Dahlan Iskan here Wednesday that Pertamina will focus its attention on becoming a regional energy company toward the end of 2014.

"We don`t want to become another NOC (National Oil Company) in the world. We want to focus attention on business," Karen said.

The meeting attended by the board of directors and commissioners of Pertamina and the two ministers was held to discuss the impact of dissolution of BP Migas.

Karen said the target to become a regional energy company would take most of the attention of Pertamina in the next two years.

"We would not become a regulator again. I would not agree to change the existing system," she said.

Pertamina once represented the government in dealing with oil and gas contractor before BP Migas took over a number of years earlier.

Dahlan Iskan agreed with Karen saying Pertamina could grow faster with its present position.

Pertamina is being busy as a professional company, it would not spend more energy to take over the function of BP Migas, he said.

Meanwhile, Jero Wacik said the newly set up Provisional Working Unit (SKSP) for Oil and Gas will work pending the establishment of a permanent body in place of BP Migas.

The permanent body will be discussed by the House of Representatives, he said.

"Let the Parliament hold the discussion on the permanent body. Any recommendation should be addressed there. We will concentrate our attention to our duties," he said.
