"The Indonesian press has often been used and not responsible to the state and nation," he said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - House Speaker Marzuki Alie criticized the Indonesian press here on Thursday as still being irresponsible in carrying out its freedom.

"The Indonesian press has often been used and not responsible to the state and nation," he said at an event to mark the 75th anniversary of state-owned news agency LKBN ANTARA.

He said press people must have responsibility with regard to the progress of the state and nation.

"If the press is not responsible it may lose direction to where it should go. Therefore the press must take a clear stance," he said.

As an example Marzuki Alie referred to reports about the House of Representatives (DPR) so far which he considered not balanced.

Because of imbalanced press reports the DPR has been portrayed

as a corrupt institution, while the fact is "there are still a lot of people in the DPR who are clean and dedicated," he said.

He said the DPR`s image has been tarnished due to generalization caused by imbalanced press reports.

"State institutions like the DPR must have been given enough portion in mass media reports," he said. (*)
