Jakarta index closes lower

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta composite share price index fell to close 34.62 points lower on Wednesday on pressure from the rupiah losing value against the US dollar.

The index of the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) fell 0.79 percent to 4,362.93 points with index of 45 most liquid stock falling 1.01 percent to 744.61 points.

Panin Sekuritas` analyst Purwoko Sartono said on Wednesday the fall of rupiah against the US dollar gave a negative impact on the BEI index.

The effects of rupiah fall was negative on issuers having high exposure in dollar, Purwoko said.

He predicted the BEI index would continue to weaken on Thursday to the level of around 4,330-4,385 points.

The number of share changing hands in trade today reached 4.696 billion worth Rp5,697 billion in 175,344 transactions with declined outnumbering gainer by 165 to 96 .

Regional markets Hang Seng recorded a 0.46 percent rise in index to 23,218.47 points with Nikkei-225 index rising 0.67 percent to 10,578.57 points and Straits Times weakening 0.46 percent to 3,220.41 points.(*)
