Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Jakarta has allocated Rp1.12 trillion to tackle flood problem this year. "We will focus on tackling flood problem in Jakarta. The budget totaling Rp1.12 trillion for the project has been approved by the city's legislative body," the city administration's head of public works service, Ery Basworo, said here on Sunday.

He said Rp541.8 billion of the funds would be used for physical development projects including installation of sheet piles along rivers and dams to strengthen the banks so that they would not easily collapse.

The rest would be used for clearing lands especially along the river banks, he said.

"Some of the physical development projects would be carried out by the central government such as the construction of a waterway that would connect the West and East Flood Control Canals and the Jakarta Emergency Dredging Initiative," he said.

Ery said Rp582.8 billion of the budget would be used to clear lands along Angke river bank totaling Rp50 billion, Sunter river bank Rp100 billion and Pesanggrahan river bank Rp200 billion.

"Right now the city's budget for 2013 has been sent to the ministry of home affairs and after it is approved and signed the land clearing and new physical development projects would be started," Ery said.

He said a total of 78 flood locations have been recorded and the city administration has set a target of eliminating eight to ten of them every year.
