Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Environmental Affairs Minister Balthasar Kambuaya has said only 21 districts throughout Indonesia have calculated greenhouse gas emissions.

"For districts that have not made calculation, please do so, because we want to know how much gas emission that we have reduced concretely," the minister said here on Friday.

In line with the presidential regulation no. 61/2011 on the National Action Plan on Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction, the government has targeted to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent by the year 2020.

Currently, the country has managed to cut greenhouse gas emission by 18 percent, according to the minister.

The gas emission reduction was thanks to the Climate Kampong program (Proklim), and treatment of industrial and transportation waste treatment.

The government has also imposed deforestation moratorium and promoted nation-wide tree planting movement with a target of planting one billion trees expected to help absorb tens of millions of tons of CO2.

The gas emission calculation is conducted voluntarily, according to Arief Yuwono, the deputy minister in charge of the environmental destruction control and climate change.

"We actually want 400 districts to calculate gas emissions, but it`s voluntary in nature, and we will compensate by providing incentives for instance by increasing the Special Allocation Funds," Yuwono.
