"Maintain the independence of the Indonesian Red Cross," the vice president said during a dialog with the participants of the Fifth PMI Volunteers National Working Meeting in Malang, East Java, on Monday.

Speaking in his opening address of the meeting, Vice President Boediono said independence was on of International Red Cross fundamental principles that made PMI stay afloat and relevant amid various changes and shifts in the country.

"PMI remains afloat and relevant because the existence of its volunteers has never been co-opted by narrow interests," Boediono noted.

Besides, the vice president added that it was because the PMI volunteers upheld the fundamental principles of International Red Cross, namely humanity, unity, Impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, and universality.

Therefore he added that PMI volunteers should continue to increase their ability, skills, and spirit of struggle, and characters.

"We hope the Indonesian Red Cross will be a place for younger generation to increase their skills and characters, and become a generation who care about the national interests," Boediono said.
