We are proud to have made Christchurch residents more aware of Indonesia and its culture."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An Indonesian puppet show and "angklung" (Indonesian bamboo music instrument) ensemble staged a 30-minute performance for a community in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Saturday.

Lead by Djoko Sulilo, a lecturer at the Otago University, the puppet show in English had a live and interactive angklung ensemble, which had attracted widespread attention from the Christchurch community, Indonesia`s Chief Representative in Wellington PLE Priatna told the press on Monday.

Along with the performances, batik, food (chicken satay, meat `rendang,` meatball `bakso,` and fish cake `empek-empek`) and traditional dances were also promoted at the Indonesian Fair held on Sept. 28. Not less than 650 people attended the event, which was open for four hours only, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. local time.

"We are proud to have made Christchurch residents more aware of Indonesia and its culture," Priatna stated.

Christchurch`s Indonesia Fair was organized by the Indonesian Embassy in Wellington in cooperation with the Cantebury Indonesian Society (CIS) and the Indonesian Student Association in Christchurch, which aims to bring Indonesia closer to New Zealand, and offers business opportunity to the two countries.

"The promotion of Indonesia in Christchurch is a window for bringing Cantebury, Christchurch, closer to Indonesia. The Cantebury area is a rich region that is supported by outstanding universities and an international airport with access to the South East Asia region," Priatna pointed out.

Some prominent New Zealand residents also attended the event, such as former Head of New Zealand`s Parliament Sir Kerry Burke, Chairman of the Waimasi Community Council Jimmy Chen and Vice Rector of Cantebury University Prof. Paul Flemming.

The committee has also set up a charity box, which will be given to Christchurch`s Cathedral to garner support for the quake victims in February 2011.
