"We have allocated Rp1.05 trillion to purchase the land, which will done next year," Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta government will purchase more land to be converted into green spaces for the city, Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama said here on Friday.

"We have allocated Rp1.05 trillion to purchase the land, which will done next year," he said, adding that it is necessary for the government to immediately put plans in place, since the price of land in Jakarta continues rising.

Among land to be purchased by the Jakarta government is the area around the Ria Rio water storage in East Jakarta, which will be made into a public park and location for street vendors to sell their products.

Jakarta covers a total land area of 661.52 square kilometres and maritime area of 6,977.5 sq km. The Jakarta government, under Governor Jokowi, has set itself a target of providing 198.7 sq km of green open spaces in Jakarta by 2018.

The current 66.1 sq km of green open spaces account for almost 10 percent of Jakarta`s total land area. The city seeks to have open green spaces covering an additional 20 percent, or 132.2 sq km of the city, in order to meet the government`s 30 percent target.

Under Law No. 26/2007 on Spatial Management, every Indonesian province must allocate at least 30 percent of its total land area to green and open spaces.

The Jakarta Spatial Plan for 2011-30 is complying with this law.

At present, of the 350 parks in Jakarta, only 10 to 15 are particularly attractive, according to urban park expert Nirwono Joga.

Among the major parks in the city are Suropati, Menteng, Situ Lembang, National Monument (Monas) Park in Central Jakarta, as well as Langsat and Ayodya parks in South Jakarta.(*)
