Semarang, Central Java (ANTARA News) - The Semarang court prosecutor on Thursday demanded a seven-month jail term for two members of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) for their alleged involvement in clashes with the locals in the Sukorejo sub-district last July.

"Both defendants, Satrio Yuwono (22) and Bayu Agung Wicaksono (22), possessed a sharp weapon without permission when the riot took place," prosecutor Fifik Zurofik said.

The defendants, through their lawyer Ichwam Tuankota, filed a plea for a lighter sentence.

"The defendants regret their action. They are still young, and they have families to feed," stated the lawyer.

The trial will take place on Oct. 31.

The clash between FPI members from Temanggung and the villagers of Sukorejo broke out last July 2013 following a sweep by FPI members of a red-light district in Patean, Kendal.

Local villagers protested the FPI action, which they believed was unjustified, especially since the area did not fall under the jurisdiction of the organization.

As a result of the clash, several FPI members and villagers were injured. Meanwhile, a car belonging to the FPI, bearing license plate number AB 7105, was torched after it struck a woman, Tri Munarti, who later died in a hospital.(*)
