Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta composite share price index closed 0.53 percent higher on Friday following rupiah appreciation against the US dollar.

The index of the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI/IDX) rose 22.51 points to 4,256.44 points with index of 45 most liquid stocks gaining 0.36 percent to 704.89 points.

"Rupiah strengthening drove the prices of share on the domestic market placing the BEI index in the positive area again," PT Anugerah Sekurindo Indahs analyst Bertoni Rio said.

Bertoni, however, said the index rise would not last long as transaction by market were only selective.

Ahead of the announcement of economic data, the BEI index would be volatile, he said.

He said foreign investors, who began to buy shares with a net buy of Rp121.825 billion on Thursday contributed to pushing up the BEI index.

On Thursday there were 81.131 transactions at the BEI with 3.33 billion shares valued at Rp3.3 trillion, changing hands.

Regional markets such as Hang Seng recorded an increase of 0.37 percent in index to 23,881.29 points with Nikkei-225 index down 0.41 percent to 15,661.87 points and that of Straits Times falling 0.31 percent to 3,176.35 points.
