Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Jakarta Metropolitan Police deployed 400 personnel to safeguard the arrival of former ruling Democratic Party (PD) chairman Anas Urbaningrum at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) here on Friday.

"We are deploying the police personnel in anticipation of any undesired actions by Anas supporters," Jakarta Metropolitan Police Spokesman Sr Comnr Rikwanto stated here on Friday.

Rikwanto denied allegations that the deployment of 400 police personnel to guard the KPK building was as an exaggerated measure.

He added that Police had the authority to deploy personnel to maintain security in accordance with the standard operational procedures.

The Jakarta Police spokesman explained that security conditions around the KPK building remained normal on Friday. There was nothing to indicate any possible unrest to be created by Anass supporters.

Anas, suspect in an alleged corruption case in the construction of the Hambalang sports complex in West Java, had come to the KPK building for interrogation.

Though he had been summoned twice earlier, he had failed to appear at the KPK office; he finally came over to the anti-corruption office building at the third summon on Friday.(*)
