Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called for maintaining economic stability in the country ahead of the general elections this year.

On Thursday, President Yudhoyono held a cabinet meeting during which the countrys economic conditions and global economic developments, including factors that had affected the domestic economy were reported.

Chief Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa stated after the meeting that President Yudhoyono had issued directives with regard to maintaining a number of economic sectors to preserve national economic stability.

"The President has asked for maintaining stability of food prices as it has a major impact on inflation," he noted.

Hatta remarked that President Yudhoyono had also reminded about the upcoming dry season and had called for anticipatory measures to prevent its impact on food production.

The head of state has also called for maintaining stability of the rupiah exchange rate, especially against the US dollar.

"Roads that have been damaged by natural disasters and rains must also be repaired and the public works ministry should pay attention to this issue," he said.

Hatta explained that President Yudhoyono had also asked to optimize spending on programs that have been agreed upon by the government and the House of Representatives and take necessary steps to prevent possible irregularities.
