Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono met with fire fighters in Riau here on Saturday in a bid to boost morale as they continue fighting forest and land fires that have caused haze to spread throughout the region.

During the meeting, he also ordered increased fire fighting operations and urged fire fighters to extinguish the blazes within three weeks.

"The intensity of the operations must be increased and I hope they could be finished in three weeks," he said.

He admitted that the fires and the haze problem caused by them had been very serious, but he called on fire fighters not to lose hope.

"Let us save our people from this disaster," he said.

After offering his advice, the President left for Kampar district to inspect the fires.

He said he had taken over direction of fire fighting and haze operations, and delegated the leadership of the operations to the head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Syamsul Maarif.

The operations are focused on fighting fires and haze, health services, treatment and law enforcement.

With regard to fire fighting, the president ordered the military commander to field a brigade of military personnel and requested that companies in the region provide help.

Separately, the president director of PT RAPP, Kusnan Rahmin, said his companys management has ordered 875 fire fighting personnel to help in the operations.

In addition to this assistance, there are also 400 people from the Fire Care Society from 23 estates and 130 operational staff members available to fight fires.

He said the company also helped by providing more than 200 fire fighting pumps with a capacity of 675 liters, and 30 pieces of heavy equipment to fight fires.

"RAPP also operates three helicopters and 30 pumps to support fire fighting operations coordinated by the government," he said.
