The El Nino phenomenon is potentially occurring in Indonesia, and is predicted to appear after mid 2014, BMKG Deputy of Climate Sector Widada Sulistya said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the El Nino phenomenon is potentially occurring in Indonesia due to the heat area that has been spotted in Pacific Ocean area.

"The El Nino phenomenon is potentially occurring in Indonesia, and is predicted to appear after mid 2014," the Deputy of Climate sector in the agency Widada Sulistya explained here on Wednesday.

According to Widada, the El Nino occurs due to the increase of sea level temperature in the Pacific Ocean.

The condition has caused changes in wind direction and in rain intensity, making the area dry.

"Indonesia is not the only country that is monitoring El Nino, but all countries in the world. No country has yet experienced the El Nino occurrence, but some countries have predicted the potential of El Nino," he clarified.

He explained that Indonesia will experience drier season if the El Nino occurs in the June to July period.

"The phenomenon will trigger drought, crop failure and forest fire in the area," Widada pointed out.

He added that the agency has informed about the potential phenomenon to related parties such as Agricultural Ministry.(*)
