Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Head of the Geological Agency Surono appealed to the villagers residing around Mount Slamet to abide by the danger zone limit, set at a four-kilometer radius from the peak, following increased activity.

"Mount Slamet eruptions are of the nature that if people abide by the limit nothing will happen," he stated here on Friday.

He explained that the volcanic materials being spewed will fall on the mountains body, and hence, the land in the five districts around the mountain will be affected.

He remarked that until now, the eruptions were not explosive in nature.

"What is important is to stay four kilometers away from the crater. Mount Slamet is just distributing its blessings to the area around it. People living around the mountain are still able to conduct their activities normally," he asserted.

Mount Slamet straddles the five districts of Banyumas, Purbalingga, Pemalang, Tegal, and Brebes in Central Java.

Due to its increasing seismic activity, the danger status of the volcano has been raised to an alert level since 10 a.m. on Wednesday (Apr. 30).

From midnight to 6:00 a.m. on April 30, a total of 30 quake tremors and 67 tremors caused by gas blows were recorded.

Meanwhile, thick smoke spewed up to 700 meters high from the mountain.

Twenty-six booms were audible and hot lava was seen flowing down as far as 1.5 kilometers away from the crater.(*)
